Tasks and activities

The Divisione Cultura (Culture Division) actively supports the Ente autonomo LAC, the Fondazione Museo d'Arte della Svizzera Italiana, the Fondazione LuganoMusica, the Fondazione Culture e musei, the Fondazione Aligi Sassu e Helenita Olivares, the Fondazione Antonio Caccia and the Fondazione Lugano per il Polo Culturale.

It promotes the preservation, protection, and enhancement of historical, cultural, and artistic heritage. It encourages cultural and creative industries through training initiatives and the creation of both thematic and cross-sectoral networks. It supports third-party cultural initiatives through consulting activities, contributions, and agreements.

The management of the Divisione Cultura plays a strategic role and coordinates the areas of responsibility listed below. It is assisted by a general secretariat supporting all areas and by the finance service. It also oversees fundraising and fosters relationships between public and private entities.

Services

The ufficio del Patrimonio culturale (Cultural Heritage Office) enhances and promotes Lugano's historical and artistic heritage: from intangible culture to monumental works scattered throughout the city, and the collections of the former Museo storico (Historical Museum), also through Lugano Cultura website.

The office is also responsible for managing the Archivio storico (Historical Archive) of the City of Lugano and the Wilhelm Schmid Museum in Brè. It is available to citizens for the following services:

  • Access to the collections of the Archivio storico (by appointment)
     
  • Requests for contributions for the restoration of protected assets at the local and cantonal levels within Lugano's territory, in accordance with the  Legge Beni Culturali (Cultural Heritage Law)

The ufficio Sviluppo culturale (Cultural Development Office) supports cultural industries and professional cultural operators active in the Lugano area, promotes volunteering and cultural associations, and encourages networking to enhance the quality of cultural offerings. The ufficio Istituzioni culturali (Cultural Institutions Office) supports and fosters collaboration between the City, citizens, and cultural institutions established or partnered with the City of Lugano: Lugano Arte e Cultura (LAC), Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI), Fondazione Culture e Musei (FCM) and Museo delle Culture (MUSEC), Fondazione LuganoMusica.
