Child Friendly City

Year: 2023

In 2023, Lugano received UNICEF's "Child Friendly City" recognition, which honors municipalities that make children's rights a daily practice. The process involved 841 minors and 93 adults. After an initial evaluation phase in which Lugano achieved an excellent score—fulfilling 70% of UNICEF's child protection criteria—the second phase focused on engaging and listening to children, adolescents, young people, and parents with young children. Based on the findings, the City is implementing an Action Plan to address their suggestions and enhance the Administration's efforts.

Fair Trade Town

Year: 2023

The City joined the Fair Trade Town initiative in 2020 with the goals of promoting fair trade and strengthening the population's inclination towards more balanced consumption. In May 2023, it obtained the certification as a Fair Trade Supporting City. To achieve this result, the municipal administration promoted a series of activities to engage, inform and raise awareness among people about the importance of fair trade for sustainable development and developed a network of public establishments participating in the project.

eduQua

Year: 2022

The Centro di formazione della Città di Lugano (Training Center of the City of Lugano) received the eduQua label for the quality of continuing education from the Swiss Federation for Adult Learning (SVEB). This label certifies continuing education institutions that demonstrate adherence to appropriate educational and organizational standards to ensure the quality of the training provided, encompassing aspects from course offerings and participant information to the professionalism of the trainers.

Energy City

Anno: 2019

Lugano obtained the Energy City label thanks to the exemplary results achieved in the development of its energy policy. The title is awarded to municipalities that have achieved at least 50% of the possible points in the field of energy and climate policy. The certification is not a final goal but a starting point for implementing new measures and streamlining activities, while continuing to develop insights, projects, and ideas. Public entities that obtain the Energy City label are periodically reassessed to evaluate their progress and confirm their compliance with the criteria that led to the award of the title. Lugano successfully obtained re-certification in 2023.

No-Littering

Year: 2017

Thanks to its anti-littering awareness activities and the introduction of targeted measures that keep the situation under control, Lugano was among the first institutions to receive the No-Littering label awarded by the IGSU – Interessengemeinschaft für eine saubere Umwelt (Swiss Competence Centre Against Littering). IGSU Lugano has a specific ordinance against littering and implements various measures to reduce its negative impact, such as participating in working groups and initiatives like the Clean-Up Day.

Training Company for Apprentices

The City of Lugano is an employer that hires numerous apprentices. Each year, it organizes a Welcome Day event, during which the City Council welcomes new hires and awards diplomas to young people who have completed their training within the municipal administration.
