Located in the district of Carona, between San Salvatore and Monte Arbostora, about 10 km from Lugano, the San Grato Botanical Park stretches at 690 meters s/m and offers exceptional views of the immediate surroundings, the lake and the peaks of the Alpine chain.
Within its 200,000 m² is the largest collection of conifers, azaleas and rhododendrons (with exceptional flowering in April and May) in variety and quantity in the Insubric Region.
More than 5.5 km of trails run through the park and are divided according to theme as follows: botanical, relaxation, scenic, artistic and fairy tale. A sensory trail created for the 60th anniversary was also added to these in 2017.
Just a stone's throw from the park's restaurant is a recreation area suitable for children of all ages: swings and slides are joined by a large multifunctional castle, balancing games, rope nets for climbing and an adventurous pulley.
The current park was once a pasture for horses, owned by jurist Martin Winterhalter. Luigi Giussani (founder of the former Monteforno steel mills in Bodio) became its owner in 1957 and oversaw the planting of the first azaleas and conifers. The property passed to the Union of Swiss Banks (UBS) in 1983 and was donated to the City of Lugano in 1997.
The park is open year-round and admission is free.
