Intermunicipal platform
The prevention of addiction concerns the entire population, but especially those who, by profession, are responsible for ensuring that certain phenomena do not arise or, at the very least, do not spread.
For this reason, in 1992, the City of Lugano established an Intermunicipal Commission with the aim of addressing the issue of drug addiction.
Since 2004, the Commission has expanded its scope to adopt a more comprehensive approach towards dependencies such as alcohol consumption, the use of drugs and/or medications, smoking, and new forms of addiction, such as pathological gambling. Its formation has promoted collaboration among services in the area, with particular attention to young people.
The Intermunicipal Prevention Commission, chaired by municipal councillor Lorenzo Quadri, is composed of:
- political representatives from the municipality of Lugano and six neighboring municipalities (Porza, Sorengo, Massagno, Collina d'Oro, Canobbio, and Paradiso)
- representatives from associations of the municipalities of the Regione Valli di Lugano and Regione Malcantone
- a group of experts
Operating platform
Within the Commission, the Socialità Division also launched in 2010 an Operational Platform for Prevention, with the aim of involving the municipalities of the Lugano area in moments of exchange and training for the benefit of operators (officials, social workers, politicians) confronted with these issues. Early intervention and networking among specialized services is indeed essential to effectively respond to current needs.
