The introduction of the garbage bag tax in Lugano

The introduction of the garbage bag tax for waste disposal and collection in Lugano was a very important change in the law. The Ufficio comunicazione (Communications Office) of the City launched a comprehensive information campaign, which gained momentum in the last weeks of 2019, ahead of the law’s entry into force on 1 January 2020. A package was delivered to all households containing an official garbage bag as a gift, a leaflet with all the necessary information about the garbage bag tax and waste collection, and a postcard with an overview of the separate collection services.

The material sent out was personalized for each district, and the informational campaign was strengthened by the presence of posters throughout the city.

For the occasion, the Lugano Servizi App was also updated, with the addition of a "Rifiuti" (Waste) section designed to help citizens manage separate waste collection. With the app, it became easier to find the nearest collection point based on the type of waste and to discover valuable information about disposal.
