Lugano currently has 39 km of bicycle routes and a nice potential for slow mobility development. The short distances between the city's main points of interest make cycling competitive with vehicles, especially in the city center. The Lugano area, spread over 300 km2, is also entirely bikeable. From Rivera, it takes less than two hours to reach Riva San Vitale via the beautiful Morcote coastline.

Since 2005, the City has carried out a series of interventions in favor of the bicycle routes, made necessary after the aggregations and road changes introduced by the PVP-Piano della viabilità del Polo luganese (Lugano's Viability Plan). Thus, a Municipal Plan for Bicycle Routes was drawn up to provide the basis for the planning consolidation of bicycle routes in the municipal area, integrating them with the network of routes of cantonal interest and with the routes of the municipalities in the belt.

To orient along the bicycle routes in the City of Lugano, a digital map is available that can be used via the Web through a simple smartphone device. Interested parties can view the routes and geolocate their location anywhere in the city.

Pathways

Ponte del Liceo-Via Crocetta

This is a bicycle route of local interest that runs along Viale Castagnola from the high school bridge in the direction of Castagnola to the mouth of Via delle Scuole. From the intersection, the route continues north along the axis of Via delle Scuole and Via alla Chiesa to the crossroads of Via Bottogno, from which it reaches Via Pazzalino through the Viganello primary schools. The route then proceeds along the route of the former Lugano-Cadro-Dino railway, now transformed into a slow mobility axis, and ends at the intersection with Salita Viarno and Via Crocetta. It then continues in the direction of Pregassona-Cadro or on Via Crocetta-Via Capelli. The length is approx. 1.6 km.

Viale Cattaneo-Via Beltramina

The 1.4-kilometer route runs from the entrance of Via Lucchini on Viale Cattaneo to Via Beltramina. There are several Publibike stations on the route to rent bicycles: on Via Lambertenghi at the USI-Università della Svizzera italiana, on Via Marco da Carona, and also on Via Beltramina.

La Via del lago

Cycling along La Via del lago (the Lake Route) is a pleasant way to visit and get to know the city. The route passes through seven neighborhoods of Lugano: Davesco-Soragno, Pregassona, Viganello, Castagnola-Cassarate, Centro, Loreto and Pambio-Noranco and skirts two others, namely Pazzallo and Molino Nuovo.
Still by bicycle, one can cross the municipality of Paradiso, continue to Noranco, ride along the Pian Scairolo and then join the national bicycle route.

Paths of the PVP-Piano della viabilità del Polo luganese

As part of the work to put the new Lugano Pole road system into operation, the following have been completed: the bicycle and pedestrian path on the lakefront between the Washington temple and Piazza Luini, the bicycle path on Via Capelli between the high school bridge and the Via Maggio bridge, and the bicycle lanes on Via Lucchini, Corso Elvezia and Via Madonnetta.

The bikesharing service currently has 116 locations in the Sottoceneri region with 750 bikes, half of which are electric.

Bikesharing

For the safety of cyclists as well as pedestrians and drivers, it is good to observe certain rules:

  • in spaces shared with pedestrians, the cyclist must ride at a walking pace giving them right of way and, if necessary, continuing on foot by pushing the bicycle
  • wearing a helmet is recommended
  • crossing main roads alongside pedestrian crossings should be done at the speed of pedestrians or, better, pushing the bicycle
  • always keep to the right, even on side streets and in 30 km/h zones
