Casa Serena
Located in the Molino Nuovo district, Casa Serena is the first born among the institutions for the care of the elderly in the City of Lugano. The residence is medicalized and the medical direction and nursing care sector guarantee a continuous presence.
The facility, which is equipped with a radiology service also available to guests of other homes, offers various services, including, for example, spaces for entertainment and physiotherapy. Casa Serena has a café and a large park that serve as a meeting place for residents and residents of the district.
Opened in 2015, the ward has ten beds, common spaces for family visits and an interview room. Access is provided 24 hours a day and overnight stays are offered to family members.
The ward and rooms are furnished, colorful, and equipped to create a warm environment reminiscent of a familiar and comforting atmosphere.
Type of patients
The ward receives patients of advanced age with evolving and non-healing chronic diseases, whose hospitalization is not necessary; these are stable patients but with a certain complexity in care, which cannot be carried out at home. In addition, the facility provides temporary hospitalizations to allow a period of relief for the family. It is, finally, a dignified accompaniment in the last period of life.
Admission
Admission takes place after an evaluation, both clinical and social, by the proposing doctor and the medical director of the cantonal social institutes and ward doctor, Dr Roberto Di Stefano. There is no free choice of doctor in the palliative care unit.
Staff
All staff (interdisciplinary team, medical director, facility manager, social worker, physical therapist, animator, housekeeper and nun) are trained and benefit from regular monthly supervision by specialists.
The team participates in meetings with family members to address patient problems, share decisions, and offer support during the accompaniment process.
The staff works in collaboration with the Hospice Ticino service, other associations in the area (e.g., SCuDo for home return projects) and refers to specialists as needed by patients.
Treatments
The ward's nursing resources are increased on the recommendation of the cantonal medical office. The aim of this service is to respond to the individual and social needs of the situations that arise, to alleviate the symptoms of physical, psychological and social pain of patients, guaranteeing a better quality of life and accompanying them to the end of their lives with medical, caring and spiritual support in a family dimension.
Tuition fee
The fee is CHF 50.- per day for a maximum duration of three months, after which, should a longer or final stay be necessary, the fee according to the cantonal regulations applicable in homes for the elderly is applied.
Spiritual care
Catholic worship services are held in the chapel (mass is celebrated from Monday to Friday at 5 PM and on Sundays at 9.30 AM).
The district parish also provides spiritual assistance on request. When possible, individual spiritual assistance is also provided according to religious confession.
