In March 2015, a reform project of the Administration of the City of Lugano was launched, aiming to achieve a functional and durable organizational model that is effective, efficient, and innovative. 

The result was a new organization of the City into seven departments, or seven macro areas of activity:

  • Istituzioni (Institutions)
  • Consulenza e gestione (Consulting and Management)
  • Immobili (Buildings)
  • Sicurezza e spazi urbani (Security and Urban Spaces)
  • Formazione, sostegno e socialità (Education, Support, and Social Affairs)
  • Cultura, sport ed eventi (Culture, Sports, and Events)
  • Sviluppo territoriale (Territorial Development)

The current organization into departments and divisions allows for more effective management of a territory that, after the latest aggregation phase, grew from just under 30,000 inhabitants in 2004 to almost 68,000 in 2022.

The activity and structure of the City place the citizen at the center of the public entity's actions, with the following objectives:

  • central role of the citizen
  • organization oriented to the needs of residents and visitors, including citizens, businesses, and tourists
  • protection and enhancement of the territory and infrastructure
  • pursuit and promotion of balanced and sustainable city development
