30 km/h Speed Zones

"30 km/h Speed Zones" was an information and awareness campaign promoted by the Lugano City Police to educate drivers of cars and motorcycles to drive carefully and respectfully in areas with a 30 km/h speed limit.

The population living in the affected districts is generally very sensitive to the issue of excessive speed in their 30 km/h zones. Vehicle drivers can and must contribute to the safety and promotion of the quality of life in these districts.

30 km/h Speed Zones

30 km/h speed zones are residential streets where, for safety and quality of life reasons, the speed limit is set at 30 km/h. This precautionary measure is necessary because streets in districts are not just corridors or shortcuts but real living spaces where children play, elderly people walk, and at night, people sleep. The reduced speed in 30 km/h zones makes pedestrian crossings unnecessary; people can move freely, but vehicles have the right of way, except in exceptional cases.

Near schools, along home-to-school routes, and near nursing homes, pedestrian crossings have been maintained as an additional safety measure. Finally, intersections are regulated by right-of-way rules.
