And Winter Goes On
From now until March, there are many opportunities in Lugano to not be discouraged by the cold and step out of the house. Let’s discover some of them.
During the months of January, February, and March, events dedicated to Lugano nel Rinascimento continue, particularly focusing on the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, just steps away from LAC. A Renaissance jewel, especially renowned for the splendid frescoes by Bernardino Luini, the church was once part of a Franciscan convent. A series of public meetings offer insights into daily urban life during the epochal transition between Milanese domination and the arrival of the Confederates.
Among the most eagerly awaited musical events of the season is the rassegna Raclette, which has been bringing the Foce spaces to life for over ten years. More recent is the series curated by the City of Lugano, Jazz me up!, also at the Foce, which “combines the elegance of jazz with the experimental boundaries of musical discovery.” Finally, still in the musical field, we mention the Random project, which since 2022 has made Studio Foce available to all associations, groups, and youth organizations in the area that wish to organize an event or a musical evening in Lugano.
But the event that most characterizes the first months of the year, in Lugano and throughout Switzerland, is undoubtedly Carnival. As we prepare to celebrate it in the various neighborhoods, we present here a postcard preserved in the Historical Archive of the City, depicting some masks from the Lugano Carnival of 1904, including the Peppèna: not – as one might think – an imaginary name, but rather the nickname of a then well-known Lugano figure, Giuseppe Rossi.
