The Cantonal Library contains a valuable collection of about 400,000 documents and 1,300 periodicals that can be consulted or borrowed. There is a large study room for consultations.
In addition to works of nonfiction and fiction, the Library's areas of specialization include literature and fiction (with special reference to Italian culture), philology, language and the arts: visual arts, graphics, design, photography, theater/dance and cinema, especially Italian.
Designed by architects Carlo and Rino Tami and built in 1941, the building that houses the Library is listed as a protected monument in Switzerland and is considered the most significant example of architectural modernism in Ticino.
