The Municipal Plan for Bicycle Routes (Piano comunale dei percorsi ciclabili) provides the foundation for the planning and consolidation of cycling routes within the municipal area, integrating them with the cantonal network and the routes of neighboring municipalities in the Lugano belt.

The new network specifically strengthens cycling routes along the city's east-west connections - linking the station to the upper and lower parts of the city - and develops fast, direct, and safe itineraries to areas with the highest settlement density. The routes comprehensively connect Lugano's main points of interest, which are equipped with bicycle parking stations.

The City of Lugano thus becomes a key player in an ambitious mobility project looking towards 2030, aimed at promoting a sustainable approach to urban transportation choices.

Extension of the bicycle network

The proposed bicycle network is based on an analysis of nearly 70 km of potential routes within the municipal area. This made it possible to identify:

  • approximately 23 km of possible bicycle routes that do not require significant interventions
  • 7 km of routes included in projects already underway
  • 8 km of potential routes that do not significantly impact road capacity
  • 9 km of potential routes with impacts on road capacity, to be evaluated in medium- to long-term planning
  • 3 km of possible routes where cycle paths are integrated into lanes reserved for public transport

The Municipal Plan, as formulated by the City Parliament in 2017, allows for the extension of Lugano's current bicycle network throughout the city.

The project has been positively received by representatives of associations specialized in slow mobility, including the Associazione Traffico e Ambiente della Svizzera italiana, ProVelo Ticino, TCS Luganese, and Ticino Cycling.

Bicycle routes map

During the European Sustainable Mobility Week, from 16 to 22 September 2023, the City of Lugano distributed an updated map of bicycle routes in Lugano and the surrounding area to all households. The map is also available in digital format.
