Lugano tram-train network
The project aims to strengthen the central role of the city within the agglomeration.
The future Lugano tram-train network is designed to connect the city center with Malcantone and Valle del Vedeggio, significantly reducing travel times: Lugano will be reachable from Bioggio in 7 minutes, from Agno and Manno in 13, and from Ponte Tresa in 24 minutes.
The project aims to enhance the central role of the city within the agglomeration, connecting strategic areas of the center with the outskirts (SBB Station, Piano del Vedeggio, Basso Malcantone, Cornaredo district, Pian Scairolo) while also emphasizing the role of Valle del Vedeggio and Valle del Cassarate.
The project aligns with the territorial development guidelines of Canton Ticino as outlined in the Cantonal Master Plan.
In April 2022, the Council of State approved the executive planning of the priority phase of the new Lugano tram-train network, awarding the task to the Collega-TI Group, led by Lombardi SA Ingegneri Consulenti of Giubiasco.
In March 2023, the Canton confirmed that the Confederation approved the project plans for the tram-train network. This represents a crucial procedural milestone, as the approval effectively serves as a construction license. Preparatory works are expected to begin in 2024-2025, followed by major works (including the excavation of the Breganzona Tunnel) over a period of about 8 years.
In autumn 2023, the Canton announced the handover of project management from Ferrovie Luganesi SA (FLP)—the infrastructure concessionaire and applicant thus far in all procedures—to RTTL SA. The new company will oversee and manage all aspects of the new line: the Bioggio-Manno and Bioggio-Lugano Centro sections, upgrades to the existing Bioggio-Ponte Tresa line, planned park-bike&ride facilities, and the new FLP workshop.
