The global shift towards a more sustainable society and lifestyle is more effective when action is taken locally, in districts, close to citizens. For this reason, cities must become key promoters of concrete measures in this direction. The City of Lugano is implementing multiple initiatives aimed at achieving the environmental, economic, and social sustainability goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.

However, there is still a lack of clear information about what sustainability means in daily life and how the various objectives of the 2030 Agenda can be translated into concrete actions to adjust individual behavior.

Through a participatory and interactive approach, the #LUGANOSOSTENIBILE project aims to present the 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs to the population of Lugano. The promoted initiatives will focus on activities and practical steps that can be taken in everyday life to align lifestyles with sustainability, positively impacting various domains.

The campaign website luganosostenibile.ch, launched in August 2021, also serves as a platform where Lugano’s citizens are invited to become sustainability ambassadors by contributing to the development of best practices, including highly personal ones, that can set an example. Only together is it possible to embark on this journey. The portal also features events, activities, and other initiatives that emphasize the promotion and achievement of sustainable development goals.

#LUGANOSOSTENIBILE is a project promoted by the Divisione Socialità (Social Division) of the City of Lugano with the support of the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE).

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their associated 169 sub-targets constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, and ecological.

The Sustainable Development Goals must be achieved globally by all UN member states by 2030. This means that each country is called upon to contribute to addressing these major challenges together. Switzerland is also required to implement the goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be found to encourage non-governmental stakeholders to participate more actively in sustainable development.

Here are the goals of Agenda 2030:

  • 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere

  • 2. End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture

  • 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

  • 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

  • 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

  • 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

  • 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all

  • 8. Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all

  • 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation

  • 10. Reduce inequality within and among countries

  • 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable

  • 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

  • 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

  • 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources

  • 15. Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss

  • 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels

  • 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

Annual initiatives

On 25 September SDG Flag Day is celebrated, a day dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.

The SDG Flag Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations. This occasion is celebrated by displaying the SDG flag, which symbolizes the global commitment to addressing the planet's most pressing challenges, such as poverty, climate change, gender equality, access to education, and social justice.

On SDG Flag Day, schools, universities, public entities, non-governmental organizations, and businesses around the world raise the SDG flag to show their support for common goals toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. The day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made, raise awareness on sustainable development issues, and inspire concrete actions to contribute to achieving the goals by 2030.

The SDG flag is composed of 17 colors, each representing one of the global goals, symbolizing the interconnectedness of various issues and the importance of addressing them in an integrated and coordinated way. The SDG Flag Day invites everyone, from citizens to world leaders, to collaborate to create a fairer, more equitable, and sustainable world for future generations.

The City of Lugano also participates in this initiative by displaying the SDG flag on the Palazzo Civico on 25 September 2024.

In April, the City launched an online contest. To participate, entrants were asked to post a photograph on social media showcasing their act of sustainability.

On Monday, 3 April 2023, the City launched the online contest #SfideSostenibili, which will run until March 2024. The Divisione socialità (Division of Social Affairs) and the Divisione eventi e congressi (Division of Events and Congresses) invite citizens to share their small daily actions to make Lugano even more sustainable via Instagram.

Each month, the two Divisions will share insights on a sustainability-related theme – from mobility to waste, from responsible tourism to water – through the Instagram channels @luganosostenibile and @luganoeventi, as well as their respective web portals #LUGANOSOSTENIBILE and Lugano Eventi (in the Magazine section).

In addition to its online presence, the #SfideSostenibili contest will also be promoted through various projects and associations in the districts.

To participate, participants are asked to document their sustainability action with a photograph and post it on Instagram. The post must also include the following elements:

  • the hashtags #sfidesostenibili, #luganosostenibile, #luganoeventi
  • a sentence describing the virtuous action
  • tagging another person to inspire them to take on the challenges.

Note: If the participant has a private Instagram profile, in addition to publishing the content, they must send it via direct message to @luganosostenibile or @luganoeventi.

Exciting monthly prizes and a grand final prize are up for grabs at the conclusion of the initiative. More information about the contest and its terms and conditions are available on the website #LUGANOSOSTENIBILE.
